Marian and Stephen Mortimer, a retired couple, had dreams of visiting Machu Picchu in Peru. They have meticulously planned their six-week dream getaway to the destination back in 2013, but tragedy stroked three weeks in their summer vacation. The husband died of severe altitude sickness, which caused water buildup in his lungs and heart failure.
Marian and the medics tried their best to revive Stephen, but he shortly fell to his death a few hours after he started to feel unwell. The couple is no stranger to traveling, so they made sure that they have travel insurance to cover them if unfortunate events may happen to them while they're in foreign seas.
Avanti, to the surprise of the widow, asked her to shell out a hefty £2,500 just to get the body home in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshike. The insurance company explained that their policies only allowed them to cover up to £5,000 - which means that she had to cover for the rest of the tab.
In an interview with The Daily Mail, the widow chose Avanti for travel insurance because they provide insurance even for those with pre-existing conditions. They even told the company that they were headed to Peru.
The rest of the Mortimer family advised Marian to sue the insurance company to get a little bit of reparation, and Avanti was eventually forced to pay out £7,000.
For couples over 65, Telegraph advises that you fully disclose your medical conditions so they can set a reasonable premium. While there are still flexible conditions for travel insurance for senior citizens, you still need to pay a lot of attention to the fine print.
To avoid situations like what Marian Mortimer had to face after what seemed to be a dream trip to Peru, you must always check with your insurer if they've updated policies. Getting the right type of travel insurance is important, and isn't one of those things that you just get on a whim.
Here's how Avanti promoted their special travel insurance for people over 65:
