Via Rail Plans A Major Renovation Of Ottawa Train Station

Via Rail will soon conduct a major renovation of Ottawa train station in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

The estimated $20 million renovation project will start on the train station in September 2016. The construction will add "an elevated passenger platform, new elevators to the tunnel and boarding platforms, new electrical room and an upgraded electrical system," reported by CTV News Ottawa.

"Railways in this country have a long history of providing service to Canadians and the Ottawa Station helps to continue this tradition for the National Capital Region,'' said David McGuinty, Member of Parliament.

According to Metro News, an added $1.7 million in federal financing will be place in partial roof remodeling and developments to other systems.

Earlier this year, the National Capital Commission has approved the design plans of Via Rail. NCC had asked the train corporation to provide broader enclosure on outdoor platforms for the better protection of the passengers.

There was no confirmation on whether the suggestion had been included in the design revealed on Thursday.

The reconstruction has started in 2007 and a $5.4 million were invested in the upcoming works for the installation of new escalators, washrooms, business lounge and parking facility.

"Once the renovations are complete, our facilities will be more accessible and mobility within the station as well as boarding and disembarking from our trains will be easier for everyone," said Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, President and Chief Executive Officer of VIA Rail.

"The Ottawa train station is at the heart of our future dedicated tracks project, which will draw more passengers with increased train frequencies, shorter travel times and more convenient and reliable schedules."

it is also reported that two trains will be servicing the Ottawa-Toronto line per weekday, "bringing the total departures to nine in each direction during the week. The new schedule is planned to start on Nov. 1," Metro News wrote.

The renovation project is expected to be completed in 2017.
