On Wednesday, The Weeknd and Belly, who are both Canadian artists, sent a strong message in protest to the United States presidential hopeful - Donald Trump. The Weeknd and Belly cancelled their gig on Jimmy Kimmel Live - where they are slated to promote Belly's forthcoming Another Day in Paradise mixtape - "Might Not."
After The Weeknd and Belly realized that Trump was also booked on the American talk show, the Juno Award-winning rapper stated they did not want to be a part in the "celebration" of Trump's controversial rhetoric, Complex reported.
"I feel like the way I was raised was to be able to see through all the titles in this world - from religion to race," the 32 year old Belly stated to the Associated Press. "I just didn't want to feel like I was a part of a celebration for somebody who has beliefs that the majority of us don't agree with."
Belly stated that as a Muslim, he appreciated his access to be in the United States. Belly also said that he loves to contribute his talent in the music industry, but, the fact that he could lose that ability through the actions of someone such as Trump, isn't just right for him, as reported by The Washington Post.
"A strong believer in equal rights for all, Belly is taking a stand against a person who has made many dismissive and damaging remarks about minorities, women, various religious groups and more," a press release from Belly's camp stated to CNN.
While Belly's appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live was meant to support his soon to be released mixtape, the rapper hopes that his fans understand his act of cancelling the gig, however, Belly still got plans to make it up to his fans very soon.
However, Trump did not comment on The Weeknd and Belly's cancellation during his appearance on the show.
