In 2010, Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, used their birthdays to raise money for charity. They gave a total of $109,000 for charity: water, a non-profit organization which brings clean water to developing nations. This year, the People website reports, the power-couple visited Ethiopia with the organization. Together, the Smiths adn charity: water inaugurated a clean well for a village of 400.
Locals brought gifts to the movie stars while they witnessed a new well being constructed in a village known as Tigray. They also opperated Yellow Thunder, the organization's new drilling rig. After the well was completed and the water supply secure, WIll and Jada celebrated with the community by singing and dancing with the villagers.
In a statement, Will Smith said, "Our trip to Ethiopia with charity: water was an incredibly eye-opening and authentic experience. It was extraordinary to meet and spend time with the people of Tigray and to see first-hand how clean water changes everything for these communities."
Besides traveling to the African country to see charity: water's work first-hand, the Smiths also raised an additional $789,000 for the cause. They encouraged donations by promising to take the top donors with them to Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is the most populated landlocked country in the world, and 50 million people there are living without clean water.
