Malware Monday: How to Check Your Computer for DNS Changer Malware July 9

Are you prepared for the Malware expected to strike your internet on Monday? The DNS Changer virus may still affect your Windows computer, leading you to lose Internet service on July 9. Mac users need not worry about the computer virus.

As a precaution, for those using Windows OS can check whether your computer is clean from the DNS Changer malware by logging onto FBI's site, going to the McAfee site, or visiting www.dns-ok.us. When you visit dns-ok.us, the page will show either a green or red screen. Your computer is free of infection if it shows green. But if it shows red, you are infected and must contact your Internet provider to get your DNS changed.

Another way to check whether your computer is infected is to log on to Google or Facebook. The two sites will automatically tell you whether your computer is affected.

Monday's problem is a result from an online advertising scam that infected over 4 million computers worldwide several years ago. When the FBI caught onto it, they realized that the servers involved in the scam would cause infected computers to lose their internet access. To divert this problem, the FBI had set up to other servers which have been connecting users to the internet. However, the server will be shut down at exactly 12:01 am. EDT Monday, which can lead to as many as 64,000 computers across the US to lose internet access.
