A dog who boarded a train to Dublin, Ireland is now safely back with his owner after train travelers used Twitter to report sightings of the animal.
On Wednesday morning, a six-year-old Jack Russell mix was spotted taking a little trip on board a train heading to Dublin. The dog boarded at Kilcock in County Kildare, Ireland. When the train arrived in Dublin, Irish Rail staff started a search for the owner of the dog named Patch.
Irish Rail sent a photo of Patch to the social networking site Twitter, saying "Lost dog!" Within half an hour, the photo was retweeted more than 500 times. Deidre Anglin, Patch's owner saw the tweets and replied to the railway saying "That's my dog!"
The dog had gone missing from his home in Kildare on Monday. By 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, his owner had been located.
"We noticed he was gone at around 4pm on Monday and we drove around for an hour or so looking for him but we couldn't find him, so we were just hoping that he would come home," Anglin told the Irish Independent.
"Then this morning, when I got into work I saw the tweet from Irish Rail, and when I opened up the picture and saw it was Patch I couldn't believe it, I was shaking with excitement," she said.
Patch made some friends with the railway staff and commuters on board the morning train. Travelers took turns petting the friendly animal and the rail workers were calling him Checker, joking that he might be inspecting people's train tickets.
When the train arrived at the Pearse Station in Dublin, railway staff took over and brought the dog into their office as they waited for Anglin to retrieve her missing K-9.
Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny told the Independent, "It was a good job she showed up as they were getting quite attached to him in the office."
Anglin was reuinited with Patch and sent follow-up photos to Twitter, documenting the reunion at the Irish Rail office and the 20 mile car ride back home to Kildare.
