When searching for hotels online, many travelers take advantage of customer reviews to determine whether or not they should stay at a certain hotel based on other's experiences. Expedia.com, the world's leading travel agency, is just one of many sites that posts user reviews. Expedia used this information to determine what the best hotels are in the world.
For the sixth year, Expedia released their Insiders' Select rankings, an annual list of the world's best-reviewed hotels. The site determined the rankings based on the reviews of more than 500,000 Expedia customers during 2011. They looked at the hotel value, pricing, amenities, and customer service ratings to determine what the best hotels are for 2012.
Although Expedia features 150,000 hotels, only 650 make the Insiders' Select list. The best of the best was Marrol's Boutique hotel, a five-star accommodation in Bratislava, Slovakia. The top American hotel is the Four Seasons Miami, which makes number five on best list. Here are the top ten hotels this year:
- Marrol's Boutique Hotel (5 stars, Bratislava, Slovakia)
- Hotel Al Codega (4 stars, Venice, Italy)
- Hotel Royal Corin (4 stars, Costa Rica)
- Hilton Garden Inn Aberdeen (4 stars, Aberdeen, Scotland)
- Four Seasons Miami (5 stars, Miami, Florida)
- Madison Hotel Hamburg (4.5 stars, Hamburg/Hanover, Germany)
- Element Omaha Midtown Crossing (3 stars, Omaha, Nebraska)
- Sonnenalp Resort of Vail (4.5 stars, Vail-Beaver Creek, Colorado)

"Expedia Insiders' Select list gives customers options and confidence to feel like they are booking the right hotel for them. Whether they want a five star experience, a beach hotel or something that's family friendly, our customers will find the best we have to offer."
Of the 650 hotels chosen, only 35 percent are considered as luxury hotels, so travelers with any budget can benefit from these rankings. For those looking for family friendly hotels, 87 are listed in the rankings. Those looking to hit the beach can choose from 116 hotels, 32 of which are in Mexico and 21 in the United States. Those who are looking to hit the slopes can choose from 11 of the hotels on the list.
The rankings represent a good selection of regions as the hotels that are listed are in 295 cities in 74 countries. The majority are American hotels at 28 percent, 25 percent are in Europe,19 percent are in Asia, three percent are in South America, and 25 percent are in other parts of the world.
