Christmas Desserts in European Countries

Christmas is the sweetest season, especially when you get to share sweet treats with your loved ones. Different countries offer different delights that are quite special and significant to each place. If you intend to spend the holidays by traveling across Europe, make sure to try these desserts made especially for Christmas time.

Zimtsterne from Germany are cinnamon treats shaped in the form of stars and designed to be swallowed in a single bite. They are mostly known for the hidden almond and white icing which resembles the winter wonderland snow.

Panettone from Italy is a sweet loaf bread which originated from Milan and later on developed to be a staple yuletide food. It usually has a cupula shape and you can taste some candied orange, citron, raisins and lemon zest in every bite.

Buche de Noel from France in English means 'Yule Log' is a sponge cake designed into a shape that looks a lot like a log. This is because during the ancient times when the reliable heater wasn't invented yet, logs are used during Christmas to keep the household warm. It is baked and flavored into different varieties but chocolate buttercream is a popular favourite.

Lussekatt from Sweden is a bun sweetened with cinnamon, currants and saffron. It comes in various shapes but the S-shape is proven the most popular. Currants are small dried berry fruit while Saffron are spices obtained from the saffron crocus flower. This treat is also simply known as saffron bun.

Pepperkake from Norway are basically gingerbread cookies but unlike other gingerbread cookies, the added pepper as one of the main ingredients gives it an extra spicy surprise. There are many gingerbread cookies out there but none of them compare to the ones from Norway.

Kutia from Poland are sweet grain pudding which you won't find missing in any Christmas Polish meal. Despite the fact that this creamy dessert is also prepared in Ukraine and Belarus, Poland boasts the best one because it is filled with almonds, chocolate, figs, honey, raisins and walnuts.
