As if staying fit and healthy isn't difficult enough while at home, it gets harder when travelling. When on a vacation it is usually treated as a time to rest, rejuvenate, and explore - staying is usually not part of the agenda. The good news is that once you set on your mind that you want to be healthy on a trip, it is doable. Here are tops on how to keep your well-being in the itinerary no matter where you are in the world.
Stay Active
Good news, the gym is not the only place where you can stay active. The little things count, the best transportation in any country is walking. You will get to save on fares as well as explore all the places you won't normally explore if you hail the cab. You can also use the stairs whenever impossible, and walking tours are so much fun. If you're going someplace that has a bicycle lane, it is also great to get those legs moving and use the bicycle to explore the city.
Eat Healthy
This advice might seem overrated but it works. It all starts with the first meal of the day. Hotel breakfasts may seem overwhelming but all you need to do is avoid the items loaded with fat and salt and stick with fresh fruits, yogurt, and cereals. You'd be amazed at how you get to know a new destination with the kind of fruits they serve during breakfast. Good salads and whole-wheat sandwiches are your bet for lunch. Wherever you are they have good ones and these meals will power you're the rest of the afternoon.
Quick Exercise
Every just for less than 30 minutes a day, use your hotel's (FREE!) gym, or go out for a quick run (a great way to explore a place too!).
Rest and Sleep
As much as you would like to explore a new place, remind yourself to rest once in a while. Make sure you still get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Schedule rest periods all throughout the day and stick to it.
Don't Stress
As much as travelling is fun, it is also stressful. Accept that flights can be delayed or that today might be a rainy day. Some things are just beyond our control but stressing about it is something that we have power over of.
