We're a few days away from the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. True-blue fans of the film know that Chewbacca and Han Solo have shot scenes in Iceland last summer. While waiting for the film to be on theaters why don't we all go to an adventure in picturesque Iceland?
Aside from being a movie setting favorite, Iceland is best known for the Björk, Sigur Rós, and its natural beauty. In Iceland you see nature's extremes from lush farmlands to black sand desert or moss covered lava fields. Did we mention that there are boiling hot springs beside icy flaciers?
Along the island's main ring road and a 90-minute drive south and east from the city is the Soheimajokull glacier. This one is not far from Svinafellsjokull glacier that is the backdrop to the Himalayas in Batman Begins and is also the land North of the Wall in the HBO TV series Game of Thrones. In here you can try to walk on ice where you will get to see up crevices, sink holes, and ice ridges.
In The Empire Strikes Back, we're introduced to Hoth, the bleak and inhospitable frozen planet isn't somewhere you would like to have a holiday in even if you're a die-hard fan but maybe the glaciers in Iceland will excite you. In here you can take a glacier hike, go ice climbing or just admire its beauty from a distance. You can also check out ice caves and go snowmobiling.
Other attractions include lava fields and rock formations in Snæfellsnes Peninsula and all this is watched over by Snæfellsjökull glacier, the 'entrance to the Center of the Earth' and destination of aliens. Of course, one should not miss the northern lights on the long winter night of the arctic where they will dance around for hours in shades of pink and purple (or sometimes just green) which is pretty incredible no matter what color it prefers to be.
