A man from Australia was able to drive through and film the devastation brought about by the Adelaide inferno.
George Hooker was driving near Hamley Bridge when he noticed the smoke from the South Australian fire. He filmed it using his phone while heading toward the road. As seen in the video, he realised that the bushfire was massive and overwhelming. He was later caught in thick smoke which slightly obstructed his vision, with only the threatening fires being visible.
"There were flames licking at the car, cinders and twigs blowing up against it," Hooker said "If I stopped I would have been dead so I just kept going not really thinking much at all."
Eventually, he found what he thought to be a safe spot and stopped his car in the Horrocks Highway. He witnessed a house nearby burnt to the ground within 10 minutes as he waited for a chance to move forward. After being informed by the authorities that it is safe to move on, he drove his way to Adelaide. He admits that he's lucky to escape the ride among the dreadful smoke and flames.
Even on November 26, Thursday, the South Australia's Country Fire Service reported that properties may still be at risk because the bushfire has not yet been contained. 16 properties including cars, buildings, farms and machinery have already been destroyed by fire. 2 people, a man and a woman, died because of the fire and the panic it brought with 1 identified as Allan Tiller, 69 years of age.
At a press conference, South Australian Premier Jay Wetheril said that authorities promise to provide $700 Australian dollar grants to families who were victims of the fire. He also made mention that the fire toll is expected to rise as the bushfire has not yet been under control.
