2 Dead and Piggery Destroyed by Adelaide SA Bushfire

Fire in Adelaide South Australia killed 2 people while 5 are in critical condition. The fire also destroyed a piggery with 2,000 still sows inside. It claimed 85,000 hectares of land worth of damages and stretched up to 210 kilometres. A fire broke out in Wasleys Piggery, one of the biggest piggery in the state, on November 25. The raging fire caused the workers to escape the piggery where 2,000 pigs were left behind, reports said. Aside from the piggery, the bushfire also destroyed nearby properties and homes.

The fire was out of control to the point that even firefighters couldn't handle it, as what residents who attempted to quell it mentioned 'We were there with firefighters ready to fight it and we just turned and ran. It was big. I think my work's gone or at least the majority of it.'

'By the time I got home she had let the horses out and she is now in hospital. She has been trampled by one of the horses.' Paul O'Brien recounts as he saw his wife injured by the panicking horses she was trying to help escape.

About 16 homes were consumed by the fire and this number did not include the outbuildings, machinery and vehicles that may have been destroyed along with the homes. An estimate of 85,000 hectares of land was destroyed by fire which stretched 210 kilometres. On Thursday, livestock assessment teams will provide assistance to the residents in dealing with the devastated properties.

The 2 people reported dead were a 69-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman from Hamley Bridge. The man was found in a paddock and the woman was in a car. Aside from them, 3 people were reported to be missing among the rubbles. 13 people were also seriously injured and are currently in the hospital with 5 of them in critical condition.

Fortunately, the fire is currently under control and conditions are better than last night. Efforts are still being carried out since some fire fronts are still in movement. There are still no clear information regarding the source of the fire.
