A number of couples hoping to say their 'I dos' in a waterfront location are hoping for better days after hearing the news that their wedding destination has burned to the ground last Sunday evening.
The Baths restaurant in Sorrento, an hour-and-a-half drive from Melbourne, burnt down on Sunday evening. Firefighters from Country Fire Authority arrived to the scene and found the centre and the roof cavity well lit. Unfortunately, the efforts and will of at least 11 firefighter who showed up at the fire scene and desperately fought the fire were not enough to save the building.
The owner and manager of the Port Nepean Road restaurant, James Gibson, took to social media and broke the devastating news to the virtual world. Gibson said: 'We are devastated that The Baths restaurant has burnt down. Thankfully no customers or staff have been injured, as it was Sunday evening and the restaurant was closed. We would like to thank the CFA volunteers for fighting the fire. If you have a wedding booked with us please contact us by phone or email so we can assist with alternate arrangements.' The Baths restaurant is overlooking the Port Phillip Bay.
He also posted a quote on Instagram with the caption: 'There is always something to be thankful for. It is still too raw for us to post any pictures of tonight's fire, however I found this picture and thought it was quite fitting'.
CFA Operations Officer Arthur Haynes said that the police authorities closed the roadway, keeping the large crowds back. The fire has damaged a large portion of the building. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined by fire investigators.
On the other hand, to make the lives of the couples who have booked their weddings on The Baths, Wedding Hire Melbourne released a statement saying that all weddings which are to be located in the venue will still be honoured. The official statement read: ''It is with sad news that we confirm that The Bath's Restaurant in Sorrento is up in Flames this evening any brides that have their wedding booked with us please contact us. All weddings will be honoured and be transferred to any location or date once you have made arrangements'.
The restaurant opened way back 2001. It has been a great place to hold weddings, functions, and other special occasions.
