Throat Transplant Poland: Rare Transplant Saves Man’s Life, Whispered ‘Thanks’ For Surgery

Throat Transplant Poland - On Monday, Polish surgeons successfully performed a rare and extensive throat transplant on a 37-year-old patient identified only as Michal. According to Dr. Adam Maciejewski, the throat transplant Poland gave the patient a windpipe and thyroid gland transplant, as well as the associated glands, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and skin.

Reports say Michal needed the throat transplant Poland since he suffered from advanced cancer of the voice box. The disease made it impossible for him to breathe, swallow and speak.

The patient appeared at the medical team's news conference at the Oncology Center in the southern town of Gliwice, and though he wasn't healed enough for him to talk much above whisper at the time, he managed to use his donor voice box in order to say "thank you" for the life-changing throat transplant in Poland.

Michal can now swallow liquefied, mushed food. The throat transplant, Poland, performed on April 11, reportedly took 17 hours.

Maciejewski, a professor at the Gliwice clinic, said there have been two similar but less extensive transplants previously performed in the world.

Michal's recovery after the throat transplant, Poland, was satisfactory. Maciejewski said intensive rehabilitation will allow the patient to eventually "eat, breathe and speak" like we do.

The main concerns from the throat transplant, Poland are possible dangers of a rejection and infections, according to the Associated Press.

Since there weren't any signs of cancer recurrence, Maciejewski said the patient had a poor quality of life and was already taking medication for preventing a rejection of the transplanted kidney. This made Michal an "ideal candidate" for the extensive throat transplant.

The throat transplant, Poland, is reportedly not Michal's first transplant. Before April 11, in 2001, he had already undergone surgery for a kidney. He hasn't yet recovered from the surgery when he had been diagnosed with cancer; and his voice box was removed along with his thyroid, after which he began chemo, reported The Inquisitr.
