A live-action "Mulan" is now being eyed by Disney after the success of the company's live-action "Cinderella." According to the Hollywood Reporter, the script for the live-action "Mulan" was bought by Disney from writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek.
The live-action "Mulan" will reportedly be centering on the Chinese legend Hua Mulan, a female warrior who was also the main character in the Disney's animated film in 1998.
Mulan ran away from her home, disguised herself as a man and joined the Chinese army against the oncoming Hun invasion to save her disabled father, who was supposed to be the one to join the army.
The original animated "Mulan" was based on a Chinese folktale from as early as the 6th century AD. Throughout its release, it has earned $304.3 million worldwide, receiving several Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
The character has now seen a resurgence in popularity. The character appeared on the popular TV show "Once Upon a Time," where she's played by Jamie Cheung.
Producers of the live-action "Mulan" were reported to be Chris Bender and J.C. Spink ("We're the Millers").
Apart from the recent announcement of the live-action "Mulan," Disney has been on a roll with live-action versions of its classic animated films.
Since having been released in theaters three weeks ago, the new live-action version of Cinderella, performed by Lily James, has earned $336.2 million worldwide to date. In 2010, the re-imagined "Alice in Wonderland" has grossed $1.02 billion. Opened in May 2014, "Maleficent," a retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" which featured Angelina Jolie as the iconic misunderstood villainess, meanwhile earned a staggering $758.4 million worldwide.
The much-loved story of "Beauty and the Beast" is also being made into a live-action retelling. The movie will star Emma Watson, Dan Stevens and Audra McDonald who only recently joined the cast. The film will be directed by Bill Condon, hitting theaters Mar. 17, 2017.
In 2016, Disney will also be releasing a new version of "The Jungle Book" and a sequel to "Alice in Wonderland." A live-action version of "Dumbo," helmed by Tim Burton, is also in the works.
Other details about the live-action "Mulan" is still known so far, apart from its writers, reports MTV.
