A firefighter falls through roof and is now in a critical condition after tackling a house fire in Fresno, California, according to the BBC. The firefighter falls through roof when the roof of the burning house gave way, engulfing the man in flames.
The firefighter, Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern, who has been serving the community for 25 years, was dragged out of the house by his colleagues after falling through the roof.
Currently, it is overwhelming how much support is pouring in for Dern, where much of which comes from social media.
After the firefighter falls through roof and is hospitalized, first responders, community members and several public leaders have sent in their prayers together with well-wishes to Dern's family, as well as the fire department.
The Fresno Fire Association reportedly used images of Dern while on duty to ask for and thank those who are offering their assistance.
"It's overwhelming," said Association President Pete Flores. "We got a call earlier from the San Jose Firefighters Association, they wouldn't take no for an answer. They're coming. They're going to help, and that's phenomenal."
Flores added it wasn't more than 30 minutes after the firefighter falls through roof that their association started receiving calls from people offering their help and support.
"Something as simple as ice drinks and snacks just to get the family and other members through the day," said Flores.
Online, Dern has also been mentioned dozens of times. There were also hundreds of comments, shares and retweets after the firefighter falls through roof while on duty. Everyone is offering their prayers and hopes of a quick recovery for the Captain.
One group even organized a Facebook effort. People were called to keep vigil each night as well as shine a light on Dern's home on April 5, reports ABC.
Doctors and nurses at the hospital are also overwhelmed by the support after the incident where the firefighter falls through roof.
"Seven fire trucks in the ambulance entrance, hundreds of firefighters coming together to try to support Pete and the family," said Sandra Yovino, a registered nurse and clinical director at the Leon S. Peters Burn Center. The center has reportedly been treating burn victims for more than 25 years.
