Surface Pro 3 Vs MacBook Air [REVIEW]

When it comes to modern laptops, the Surface Pro 3 and the MacBook Air are the main players in the never-ending war between Microsoft and Apple. Basically, both models are designed to be handy, mobile and multitasker-friendly. Catchy ads and marketing efforts aside, what exactly separates these two devices, and which one is the best for you?

Hardware - Advantage Surface Pro 3

When it comes to hardware specs, choosing can be very difficult, as the Surface Pro 3 and the MacBook Air have very similar aspects. Nonetheless, the Surface Pro's ability to be used as a tablet (you can leave the keyboard cover behind) is clearly light-years ahead of what Apple has to offer.

Screen Size - Advantage MacBook

While there seems to be negligible difference when it comes to weight, the MacBook Air reigns over the Surface Pro 3 in screen size. Surface Pro only has a 12 inch screen, whereas the MacBook air has a 13.3 screen with 1,440 x 900 display, making it excellent for watching movies and videos on the go.

Ports and Connectivity - Advantage Surface Pro 3

Apple's latest MacBook only uses the USB 3.1 type-C, a revolution in computer port technology. Unfortunately, the rest of the world still uses the traditional ports, making it quite inconvenient to have to buy a converter or a dongle just so you could connect to your printer.

Price - Advantage Tied

The 13-inch MacBook Air's prices range from $899 to $1,649. On the other hand, the Surface Pro 3 ranges from $999 to $1,949. The latter's price however, excludes the keyboard. Factor in $130 more for it, and you pretty much have two devices with no considerable price difference between them.

In conclusion, the way you choose between a Surface Pro 3 versus a MacBook Air will all depend on your needs. If you need a computer and a tablet at the same time, go for the Surface Pro. However, people looking to work solely with Apple's latest OS X should go for the MacBook, because Microsoft has no operating system to date capable of reading this new OS.
