Sid Meier’s Starships Review: What Comes After Earth?

From building some of the greatest civilizations of the past, everyone's favorite master strategy/world-building game designer now takes you to the future with Sid Meier's Starships. The latest of his creations allows you to take control of starships, build an army, and fight for intergalactic peace.

Sid Meier's Starships is a sequel to Civilizations: Beyond Earth. Here, you get to travel to new planets and take on missions meant to help the innocent against the ravages of the Space Pirates. Along the way, you get to build your fleet and expand it into the greatest interplanetary federation in the galaxy.

All-in-all, Sid Meier's Starships is an excellent find for sci-fi fans looking for a standalone title with enough content and playability for thousands of hours of exciting gameplay. This game is perfect for lapsed gamers, or old-school PC and console fans. While it doesn't look very much like the well-loved Civilizations game, the overall feel and rhythm of Starships embody a sense of familiarity that only Sid Meier's games could provide.

In-Game Features

  • Tactical Combat with Fully-Generated Maps
  • Customizable Starships
  • Diplomacy and Treaty Elements
  • Multiple Strategies to Victory

Game Starts

The game begins with you being able to control a homeworld and two ships. At this point, you are given the freedom to travel to nearby planets and complete missions, which will increase your influence over these places. Gain enough influence and you will eventually be able to induct them into your planetary federation.

Strategy

Missions are won by tactics. Manage your fleet as you spend acquired energy on upgrades and new ships. You will have to be resourceful and experiment with different types of starships until you find which one best suits the demands of each mission.

Accessibility

One of the best things about Sid Meier's Starships is the convenience of gameplay. You don't have to be a guru among strategy gamers to understand the controls. Moreover, the game is comprehensible enough even if you haven't played a lot of strategy in a while.

These days, when the gaming world has been overrun by recurring titles and dizzyingly beautiful graphics, it pays a lot to get back to a time when strategy ruled over every other aspect of the game. Sid Meier's Starships delivers on this and more.
