Fuel Truck Overturns - A tanker truck passing through Prince George County had overturned at the Interstate 95. The incident occurred Tuesday morning. The said truck had been carrying more than a thousand gallons of biodiesel fuel.
Due to the fuel truck overturning at the I-95, massive response from authorities ordered a quick shut down of the Powder Mill Road. According to investigation done, the truck had crashed at the southbound lanes of the interstate at around 10 in the morning. It overturned and spilled 700 gallons of biodiesel.
A Ford Focus was struck at the time the fuel truck overturned. The Ford on the other hand had side swept a Nissan Altima as well. It is said that Ford had changed lanes abruptly that caused the tanker truck to avoid hitting it, but ultimately led to the truck overturning and crashing. Two people were reported to be injured from the incident. On the other hand, the driver of the truck is said to be in good condition.
The driver of the Ford has been identified as Christopher Rhodes. He is to be charged with following too closely, an unsafe lane change, reckless driving, and failure to control speed to avoid collision.
"...[A] thousand-gallon section of that truck was leaking, with a golf ball-size hole," reports Paul Gomez of Prince George's County Fire & Rescue in an interview with NBC Washington. "Our hazmat crews were able to patch that hole to slow the leak down, and they're working to contain the runoff."
Despite the incident of the fuel truck overturning and spilling gallons of diesel on the interstate, authorities claim that the biodiesel was likely to ignite given the cool weather. After the tanker crash, all northbound lanes of the Interstate-95 have been opened at around 1 in the afternoon. Southbound lanes were also opened a few hours after.
