Airplane Turbulence Leaves 5 Injured

Turbulence can be scary at any level, but for one United Airlines flight, the turbulence was so bad that passengers and crew were seriously injured.

The United Airlines flight was headed from Houston, Texas to New York's LaGuardia Airport when it ran into some heavy turbulence as it passed through a storm system on Tuesday. The turbulence was so extreme that is caused passengers and crew on board the Boeing 737-700 plane to fly up to the ceiling and slam down on the floor.

The flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Lake Charles Regional Airport in Louisiana.

One of the 76 passengers on board, Jeff Hornback spoke about the incident with TV station KPLC 7 of Lake Charles, LA .

"We were about 30 minutes into the flight and the flight attendants were preparing to serve drinks. Right about that time we hit some really severe turbulence and people who weren't buckled in or the flight attendants flew up and hit the ceiling of the plane and immediately were slammed down to the floor of the plane."

The flight was met with EMT crew and ambulances to take injured passenger to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Tuesday night. Three members of the flight crew and two passengers were injured during the incident. Some were taken off the plane by stretchers. One of the flight attendants is in serious condition and is being treated for serious injuries in the hospital. The two other flight attendants are expected to be okay.

"I heard both the pilot and a flight attendant say that they had been flying for 20 or 30 years and had never seen anything like what they had saw today," said Hornback.

According to other passengers on board, all of the passengers were removed from the plane. Many waited several hours for a relief flight to arrive and continue the tip to New York.

According to CNN, The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
