US Loudest Quietest spots have been indicated on a map by none other than the National Park Service Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division. So what parts of the United States made it to the list of quietest? What parts of the United States have been dubbed as the loudest?
Before the US loudest quietest spots were shown on a map, the NPS Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division had started out the study in hopes of sharing the greatness of spending a night in the great outdoors. The division of NPS hopes to keep "acoustic and night sky environments unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."
The project created a sound inventory from 546 sites across the United States in a total 1.5 million hours. The combination of the samples revealed that more vegetative areas tend to be noisier than that of the dessert. The map, which plots US loudest quietest spots, was revealed at the annual meeting by American Association for Advancement of Science. Check it out here.
So what part of the country made it to the US loudest quietest? Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York had a recorded noise level reaching more than 50 decibels. Thus, these three areas have been dubbed the loudest in the United States. As for the quietest, the spot belongs to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The sound level reached below 20 decibels.
"These data show that most people live in environments where night skies and soundscapes are profoundly degraded," reveals the data in a report by Newser.
Apart from noting US loudest quietest spots, the study aims to help the National Park Service identify areas in the United States where human kind has been disrupting wildlife. For those who are tired of the hustle and bustle, and not to mention noise of the city, head out to the quietest spots on the map colored blue here.
