"Our airline launched in 2007 because we believed travelers deserved better choices in air travel. We are excited to start new service to PDX and we hope our unique blend of low fares and inventive service will be a fresh alternative for Portland travelers," said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush.
The award-winning domestic airline launched the services at a function on 5th June in San Francisco in which the Mayor of Portland Sam Adams and actor Kyle MacLachlan participated. David Cush, CEO and President Virgin America, launched the first flight from San Francisco to Portland by cutting the ribbon.
"We're pleased to welcome Virgin America to Portland International Airport," said Bill Wyatt, Port of Portland executive director. "Virgin America is known for its award-winning service and for doing things differently, and will bring PDX travelers new options for two of our most popular routes-Los Angeles and San Francisco."
Being the youngest fleet in the U.S., Virgin America offered a lot sleeker hi tech amenities like onboard Wi-Fi, cabin "mood lighting" which changes 12 shades based on outside light, custom-designed seating, power outlets near every seat.
Port of Portland Chief Operating Officer Vince Granato said, "Virgin America, with its award-winning guest service and hip in-flight amenities, is a great new addition to our roster at PDX, we think Portland travelers will embrace this new choice at the airport and we look forward to a long partnership with this innovator in the airline industry."
The airline is an introductory low fare of $99 from Portland to San Francisco and Portland to Los Angeles, according to a company press release.
