ISIS Al Asad Base - Islamic militants have attempted to penetrate the the Al Asad airbase on Friday but they were quickly extinguished even before they could reach the Iraqi and American troops in the said base.
Military officials said about 25 ISIS fighters headed to the Al Asad Airbase and all of them were wearing Iraqi Army uniforms to trick the army men training there, ABC News reports.
However, Iraqi forces were quick to act and repel the suicide bombing attack. Hence, the ISIS fighters didn't make it near the airbase. But it is still quite alarming that they managed to get past the watch towers, barbed wire and the bridged entrance over a river.
Local reports said no U.S. military members were hurt due to the ISIS Al Asad Base attack.
"About 7:20 a.m. (Iraqi time, Friday, Feb. 13) a small Daesh element attacked an Iraqi Army facility on the Al Asad Air Base in Anbar province," read a statement from Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve.
Foreign Affairs for the U.S.-led military coalition in Iraq chief Sean Ryan told CBS News that the attackers didn't really make it to the base and that they were "nowhere near" the American forces when they were killed.
While the identities and the motive of the suicide bombers weren't immediately known, a U.S. defense official claimed that they are members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The ISIS Al Asad Base attack comes a couple of days since local reports claiming that the militants are shelling Ain Al Assad.
