Sweaters For Penguins Oil Spill: Australia's Oldest Man Knits The Cutest Sweaters For Penguins Affected By Oil Spill

Sweaters For Penguins Oil Spill - Not many make it to 100. Not all those who make it to a 100 even have time to spare for arts and crafts. However, a 109-year old Australian is different from the rest. Alfred "Alfie" Date, the oldest man in Australia, spends most of his time knitting cute sweaters for penguins victimized by the oil spill.

Channel Nine News was the first to report on Alfie and his sweaters for penguins' oil spill. The habit of knitting sweaters all started when Phillip Island's Penguin Foundation had asked for Alfie's help in knitting tiny sweaters for the hundreds of injured little penguins. These species are only found in New Zealand and Southern Australia. Of course, Alfie couldn't say no to the request. Since then, Alfie has been making sweaters for penguins oil spill.

"The girls who used to work for me, they'll tell you I'm a sucker. I can't say no," shares Alfie, adding, "It's a good way of getting along in life. You make friends all the time but you don't make a fool of yourself either."

Alfie, who has been making sweaters for penguins oil spill, has been knitting for almost 80 years. This venture is of course his first for bird sweaters.

The Foundation stresses the point on the other hand that the sweaters are not a fashion statement but simply a way to prevent the injured penguins from swallowing toxic oil. Oil the size of a measly thumbnail could easily kill a small penguin. In 2001, more than 430 penguins were affected following the major oil spill. Most of the penguins were released back into the wild.

For those who wish to make sweaters for penguins oil spill, there are still a lot of donations at this time. The Foundation adds that they do not need further donations.
