Dozens of people, including children, were injured after their tour bus flipped over in central Kentucky on Wednesday evening
According to police, 55 people were on board when the accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Central time in Hart County, about 70 miles south of Louisville. The passengers included 21 adults, 34 elementary students, and the one driver.
There were no life-threatening injuries, but several passengers were hospitalized as they complained of neck and shoulder injuries, minor scrapes and bruising.
According to Wave 3, Trooper Jonathan Biven of the Kentucky State Police said, "We have a couple of lacerations. Nothing that appears to be life threatening. I don't even believe we have any broken bones. It looks like it's going to be minor cuts and scrapes."
The tour bus contained a group of students from Hart County Cub Run Elementary School who were on their way from the school to Washington D.C. on a non-school sanctioned field trip. The trip was organized by parents and student travel company WorldStrides.
The private tour bus was set to travel overnight. It has just left the school and only made it five miles into the trip before crashing. The driver went off the right shoulder of the road while going around a curve and overturned.
Even though the trip was not school related, the Hart County Schools Superintendent came rushing to the scene while some of the students were being transported to the hospital.
"There were probably 20 kids still here all shaken up and all waiting for their parents to come. It was a very emotional time," Ricky Line told Wave 3.
A manager at Hardin Memorial Hospital said that 14 people came to hospital from the crash via ambulance and regular cars. They said that all victims would be treated and released for minor injuries. Some passengers also went to Caverna Memorial Hospital to be treated.
The bus was removed from the scene three hours later.
