The young Canadian singer Justin Bieber knows what it's like to be swarmed by wild fans and paparazzi no matter where he travels to. Police almost declared a state-of-emergency in Norway where Bieber was set to perform a free concert. With all of that attention, it's nice to be able to get away from it all. Bieber did just that by purchasing a home in the city of Calabasas, California, which lies just on the border of Los Angeles County.
Calabassas is a city where many celebrities have purchased homes to have some more privacy. The city is located within the Santa Monica Mountains, about 9 miles from the ocean, making it close to Los Angeles, but about 20 miles north of the paparazzi mainstay of Hollywood.
Due to its distance, paparazzi tend to stay away from this location. Many paparazzi are poorly paid, making it hard for them to afford the money or time to travel to inconvenient locations to snap a picture of an in-demand celebrity. They tend to stick around centrally-located places like the airport and luxury stores in Beverly Hills and Hollywood.
Calabassas is home to about 20,0000 residents including home to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Lisa Marie Presley, several members of the Jackson family, members of the Kardashian family, and many other celebrities and wealthy businessmen. Britney Spears also moved to this location a few years ago to try to escape photographers.
The community usually remains undisturbed, but Bieber's arrival has changed all of that. Paparazzi have been forgetting about the travel distance and they are swarming the area to try to catch a photo of Bieber and his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. Big photos like this mean big bonuses for photographers, so they don't mind paying a little more for gas money.
Photographers have also been sitting in the parking lot of The Commons, the main shopping center in Calabasas. Residents of Calabasas utilize this area for its movie theater, bookstore, shops, and restaurants.
Calabasas council members are concerned about the extra costs that will be needed for law enforcement, but they are still welcoming of Bieber into this once private celebrity locale.
