Being in love is one of the greatest things in the world, but finding someone to love can be a challenge nowadays. More and more people are turning to online dating sites to broaden the spectrum and hunt for possible love interests. It may be that you're looking in the wrong places. Some cities don't have a lot of fish in the sea to choose from, so they might not be your best bet to find love.
Caitlin Dewey of Kiplinger.com did some research and looked at certain data to determine which cities may not be so lucky for love for singles who are looking for a significant other. To compile a list of the worst cities for singles, Kiplinger took a look at places where the percentage of unmarried households falls well below the national average of 49.4 percent to indicate where the least amount of singles were.
They then took income and cost of living into consideration for singles who are looking for a mate who is financially stable. They used on data from the Census Bureau and the Council for Community and Economic Research to factor in singles that may not be well of.
For fun, they also came up with average date-night costs in these cities to help you plan a date if you do happen to find someone in one of these worst cities for singles.
Singles looking for love should steer clear of the following cities and consider traveling somewhere else.
10. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
Metro population: 134,851
Unmarried households: 42.5% (avg.= 49.4%)
Cost-of-living score: 94.4 (avg.= 101)
Median household income:$46,336
(avg.= $49,536)
Date-night tab: $26.58
This city is home to beautiful lakes and popular ski resorts that fraw in families and tourists, but it isn't the best place for singles, as they are outnumbered. One-fifth of the population is older than 62 and one-third are families with children. However, the nearby Spokane, Washington has low living costs, higher incomes, and 50 percent of singles.
9. Florence, Alabama
Metro population: 146,208
Unmarried households: 45.2%
Cost-of-living score: 92.5
Median household income:$39,460
Date-night tab: $26.19
Florence in Italy may be a romantic location, but not so much in Alabama. The cost of living here is low, but income is also low as there are limited jobs. Singles may have a better chance in Birmingham, where living costs are even lower, but incomes are 21 percent higher and the dating pool is five percent larger.
8. Asheville, North Carolina
Metro population: 416,276
Unmarried households: 44.9%
Cost-of-living score: 101.7
Median household income:$44,059
Date-night tab: $26.95
Asheville is a perfect spot for retirees who enjoy the foliage on the Blue Ridge Mountains, but singles won't have much luck here. Unmarried adults are a minority here and there are only 17.5 percent of young adults. There is also a limited job market, so singles may want to head to Durham, N.C. instead.
7. Morristown, Tennessee
The pickup line,"Are you from Tennessee, because you're the only 10 I see," might not work anywhere, but it is even more useless in this Tennessee town. This small town was hit hard by the recession and has a high unemployment rate. Singles aren't likely to find someone who graduated college here as only 13 percent of adults have a four-year degree. Singles are limited too as only nine out of 20 adults here aren't married.
6. Prescott, Arizona
Metro population: 209,260
Unmarried households: 45.3%
Cost-of-living score: 100.3
Median household income:$43,290
Date-night tab: $23.49
This historic city is also an attractive place for retirees, but singles might want to head to Flagstaff instead. The majority of adults are married in Prescott and unemployment is high.
5. Kingsport, Tennessee
Metro population: 307,637
Unmarried households: 43.5%
Cost-of-living score: 91.0
Median household income:$37,749
Date-night tab: $27.99
Kingsport's available singles are the second-lowest on this list and jobs are limited to manufacturing and related industries in this industrial town, meaning incomes are a whopping 24 percent below average. Memphis is a better choice as they have high incomes, low cost of living, and more singles than married couples.
4. Punta Gorda, Florida
Metro population: 159,385
Unmarried households: 40.9%
Cost-of-living score: 93.5
Median household income:$45,037
Date-night tab: $31.69
Punta Gorda is yet another retirement town. The single rate is the lowest, with only four in 10 adults being single. Four in ten are also over the age of 62. Unemployment is very high at 10 percent, so singles should run to the lively Florida city of Miami, where the majority of adults are single.
3. Lake Havasu City, Arizona
Metro population: 199,177
Unmarried households: 46.0%
Cost-of-living score: 108.9
Median household income:$39,785
Date-night tab: $23.36
This Arizona city was features in "MTV Spring Break," which comes as a surprise as this desert town is more set for retirees. One-third of adults are over 62 and the majority of adults are married, making pickings slim for singles. Also, it isn't the best place for young adults as incomes are very low while living costs are higher-than-average. Young singles might want to consider heading to Santa Monica Hills in California to find their significant other.
2. Ocala, Florida
Metro population: 326,833
Unmarried households: 44.3%
Cost-of-living score: 99.7
Median household income:$40,339
Date-night tab: $24.25
This Florida town is even lower on the list than Punta Gorda. It is flooded with retirees, unemployment is at a high 11.6 percent and salaries run low. Gainesville is a better option for singles as six out of ten adults are unmarried and more jobs are available.
1. Yuma, Arizona
Metro population: 190,526
Unmarried households: 42.1%
Cost-of-living score: 95.4
Median household income: $40,340
Date-night tab: $25.09
Yuma is the third Arizona city to make the list and it reigns as the absolute worst city for singles. Singles who are looking for jobs will have a terrible time here as one in four residents are jobless. Singles only have 42.1 percent of the population to choose from here, making it very hard to find a significant other. The overwhelming majority of this city is made up of families. Yuma's limited dating pool and even worse job market make it the worst of the worst cities for singles.
