New York Groundhog Bites Mayor - In what hopes to be a better season this time around, the Mayor of Wisconsin took time to have an earful with the renowned groundhog, Jimmy. Before predicting the upcoming weather, Jimmy took a bite out of Mayor Jon Freund's ear.
Jimmy made quite the entrance at the winter forecast in Sun Prairie. Present at the event was none other than Mayor Freund. Ironically, the prediction took quite the turn when the New York groundhog bit the mayor.
Such tradition of asking groundhogs the weather has been a German legend. If a furry rodent sees its shadow on the date of Feb. 2, then winter would most likely last six weeks. However, if the rodent doesn't see its shadow, then spring would likely come early.
The tradition of groundhogs predicting the weather dates back to the year 1887 from Punxsutawney, PA. While Jimmy, the New York groundhog bites mayor, predicted that spring would be on its way, other groundhogs from other areas in the country predicted otherwise.
Phil, the groundhog from Pennsylvania predicted that there would be six more weeks of winter. On the other hand, Chuckles the groundhog from Connecticut predicted the same thing as Phil, which was six more weeks of the cold. For Jimmy, the New York groundhog bites mayor, this wouldn't be the first time in history.
Mayor Bill de Blasio might not have fallen victim to New York groundhog bites mayor, but he did drop the groundhog at the ceremony that took place last year. This may or may not have contributed to the groundhogs death which occurred two weeks after it was dropped.
As for another New York groundhog bites mayor instance, the last mayor of New York namely Michael Bloomberg also suffered the same fate as Freund. Bloomberg was also bitten by a groundhog in 2011 after it predicted the upcoming weather.
