Summer travel is expected to increase that summer. Families are planning trips to large amusement parks, couples are planning romantic getaways, and friends are getting ready for road trips. However, surveys show that more people will also be taking a trip alone.
According to a survey of 1,500 US adults by American Express, 59% of Americans are planning a summer vacation this year. Of those, 16% say that they will be traveling alone. This is an increase from 12% last year.
There are several reasons why people are planning to travel solo this year. There might be less of a stigma about traveling along. It might be that more adults are living alone. Also, certain travel providers are getting rid of their "single supplement," meaning that someone traveling alone pays the same for accommodations as a couple would, rather than paying extra to make up for lost costs.
"Consumers want deeper, richer experiences when they travel," said David Patron, vice president of American Express Travel in a Wall Street Journalreport. "When a traveler visits a destination they want to understand the local traditions and feel like they are getting a true insider experience."
Some travel options are even becoming single-friendly, especially cruise lines. The Norwegian Epic and Fred Olsen Cruise ships offer single cabins. Some hotels offer smaller single rooms at lower rates that bigger rooms.
Independentraveler.com offers several tips for those who are planning to go on a trip by themselves.
"People who have never traveled alone often describe their first solo trip as an almost religious experience. To take in new surroundings unfiltered by the prejudices, tastes or preferences of a traveling companion can be heady stuff. Traveling alone gives you the chance to indulge yourself fully."
Those who plan on traveling alone will have the chance to meet and socialize with fellow tourists, but they should always take caution. Traveling alone can be dangerous and make someone more vulnerable, so it is recommended to check in with someone back home, stick around public places, carry identification and keep your guard up at all times.
