Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman reportedly never prayed during all those years they were married to each other, due to a certain religion. This surprising bit of news is only one of the many bombshells that were unleashed in the new documentary, "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison Belief."
The highly controversial documentary premiered on Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival. Although it was only a few days ago, the litigious-happy organization had already decided to renounce the film.
For a span of two hours, the movie's viewers are given a more in-depth look into the church that was founded by L. Ron Hubbard, an eccentric author, in 1953. The religion's chief belief is that discharging emotions and removing the "evil aliens" from within will lead to spiritual satisfaction.
The vivid recollections of former high profile members of the group were chilling. They detailed the physical abuse that they had to go through. There were also times when they were blackmailed. Plus, some children were also taken from their mothers, regardless if they were still nursing. "I regret the entire experience," shared one former high ranking officer.
Moreover, in the documentary, it would appear that Tom Cruise was one of its main focuses. He was oftentimes only referred to as "The Guy."
Cruise had reportedly fallen in love with Kidman on the set of "Days of Thunder" in 1990. However, since Kidman's late father was a psychiatrist, she was considered by the entire religion to be an enemy. Apparently, they did not have any faith for the profession. According to the former members who have spoken up, Kidman was labeled a PTS, or Potential Trouble Source.
True enough, she ended being one when Cruise had to "drift" from the group since he had to shoot "Eyes Wide Shut" in 1999.
David Miscavige, the head of the church, was reportedly desperate to get his ambassador back. He came up with a plan to "facilitate the breakup." He sent officials to "audit" the actor's mental state so that they could easily trigger his paranoia. Soon enough, Cruise gave a wire tap order for Kidman's phone because he was concerned that she was talking to other people, who are not members of Scientology, about their problems.
