McDonald's Sued For Discrimination - The largest fast-food company is walking on thin ice after it was revealed today that some of its previous employees have filed a lawsuit, suing them for being discriminating.
According to the BBC, ten former McDonald's employees have sued the largest chain of hamburger and fast food restaurants due to racial and sexual discrimination.
More specifically, the former employees are seeking justice against a branch in Virginia, where the people manning it were very discriminating to "black" people.
While McDonald's is yet to comment on the lawsuit, it has issued a more general statement saying, "McDonald's has a long-standing history of embracing the diversity of employees, independent franchisees, customers and suppliers, and discrimination is completely inconsistent with our values."
"McDonald's and our independent owner-operators share a commitment to the well-being and fair treatment of all people who work in McDonald's restaurants."
The lawsuit that is suing McDonald's was file in a federal court and the plaintiffs are claiming that both the big fast-food company and one its franchises violated Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act for subjecting their employees to "rampant racial and sexual harassment," Aljazeera America has learned.
The lawsuit is specifically targeting the Virginia branch of McDonald's that is owned by Soweva Corporation. The complainants said the managers of the branch always used discriminating epithets against their employees, including "dirty Mexican," "ghetto" and "bi**h" among others.
The female employees also complained that the managers "inappropriately touched" their legs and buttocks. Some even had sexual relations with female employees.
Additionally, there is an obvious difference in the way the managers treated white employees from black employees.
Black employees were almost always immediately punished for small mistakes while white employees easily get away with their mistakes. What's worse is that black employees were quickly replaced by white workers whenever an opportunity to fire the former would arise.
All of the 10 plaintiffs in the case seeking for justice against the discriminating McDonald's branch were fired in May 2014. Nine of them are African American while the other one is Hispanic, reports The Guardian.
Despite McDonald's efforts to point out that they have a "hands-off" policy towards franchises, the National Labor Relations Board still insists that the company is liable and responsible for the labor violations committed by its franchises.
