Popcorn Time iOS Causes Netflix To Worry; New Rival Referred To As ‘Netflix For Pirates’

Popcorn Time for iOS units that have been jailbroken, as well as other Mac devices, allows the user to stream movies, and television show torrents, from the cloud. It has an interface that is very easy to use, in addition to a wide selection of media content.

This is probably why Popcorn Time iOS has oftentimes been referred to as the "Netflix for pirates." A lot of people have been using this application, that Netflix now considers it to be one of their strongest direct competitors.

Netflix sent a letter to their shareholders recently and stated that piracy was increasingly developing into one of its "biggest competitors." They even specifically mentioned Popcorn Time iOS as a potential rival. Those who have had the chance to use the said app can easily see why Netflix would be worried.

Everyone can very easily download the app. Once installed, TV shows and movies can now be streamed, without having to know anything about torrenting at all. Although piracy over BitTorrent is not a new issue, it has never been as easy as Popcorn Time iOS makes it.

Netflix even came up with a Google Trends graph in order to find out how popular the searches have been in the Netherlands lately, with regards to video streaming companies, such as HBO, Netflix, and, the new kid on the block, Popcorn Time. Sadly for the first two, Popcorn Time is now just as popular as they are. Thankfully for Netflix, the same could not be said for a global scale.

Netflix dwarfs both HBO and Popcorn Time in a global comparison, but the leading streaming company still refers to Popcorn Time's newly found popularity as "sobering."

Media services, such as Netflix and Spotify managed to become successful in their fields by making media content streaming much easier to do over piracy. However, now that Popcorn Time has entered the picture, many would soon realize that there is a way for them to easily pirate content over having to use Netflix.
