Olivia Munn of "The Newsroom" recently shared that she has no problem in standing up to directors while she starred in the hit HBO series. Apparently, neither did Aaron Sorkin, the creator and writer of the highly watched TV drama.
Munn had a chat with HuffPost Live on Wednesday, and she was not hesitant in expressing her disdain over something that her "Newsroom" directors asked her to do. There were times when she was asked to "take the girly route," which entails having to "smile and smirk." When she refused to adhere, Sorkin became her ally.
"He was, like, '100% not. Do not," Olivia Munn "Newsroom" star said, "And, we were always on the same page, and then he would come up and back me right away. When you have him backing you - that meant everything."
Apparently, there was one scene where Munn was not being flirty enough as the girlfriend of Don, her on-screen boyfriend, played by Thomas Sadoski. "One director pulled me aside and said, 'Olivia, the thing is, I'm the director. So, I have to look at the entire rainbow and you're bringing something, but I don't think you realize maybe how you're coming off,'" she recalled.
"I go, 'Oh. So, do you don't think I realize how my choices are coming off? How am I coming off?'" she said.
She then admitted that she felt happy when the director responded, "Aggressive." "I go, 'Great! That's exactly what I wanted!' And that was it!" the Mortdecai actress added.
Munn felt like the show makers were somehow neglecting the authenticity of her character, as well as the events that have transpired in the "other two seasons." She felt that the representation they wanted her to comply with was both inaccurate and demeaning to her role.
"I felt, like, just because you're in a relationship doesn't mean you have to start being, like, all giggly and girly," she said.
