Although Disney is known as "the happiest place on earth," one passenger on board a Disney Cruise line was far from pleased when her iPhone was stolen on the ship. Using a bit of investigative skills and Apple's technology, she was able to discover that the culprit behind the theft was none other than a Disney cruise crew member.
In April, Katy McCaffrey set out for a fun-filled trip on board Disney Wonder, which leaves from California. She came back disappointed, as her iPhone went missing on the ship.
However, using Apple's iCloud technology, McCaffrey was able to track down the man who she believes is the thief. Her phone was linked to an iCloud account and Photo Stream, which sends data to her other Apple devices. The alleged thief took several photos on board the ship, which were all sent to McCaffrey.
From the photos, she was able to identify the thief as a crew member on board the ship. The nametag was that of a crew member named Nelson. The photos include Nelson on board the ship, taking pictures with a sunset, partying with fellow crew members, and even intimate pictures of what McCaffrey calls Nelson's girlfriend.
McCaffrey posted some of the photos on her Facebook page in an album entitled "Stolen iPhone Adventures." She captioned each photo, such as one taken during a stop in Mexico. McCaffrey wrote "Nelson likes to take photos of buildings in Mexico with stolen phones." The whole album tells a humorous story of Nelson's adventures with McCaffrey's cell phone, but it is no laughing matter for the alleged iPhone thief.
In addition to posting the photos, McCaffrey alerted Disney and forwarded the photos. Disney is not taking the issue lightly.
"We have a zero-tolerance policy for this type of behavior," a Disney spokesperson said. "We are taking aggressive action."
Security firm Sophos said "It is unclear whether Nelson was in fact the thief, or if he simply purchased the stolen phone from someone else on board the ship. It isn't looking good for him at the moment though."
USA Today quoted Rebecca Peddie, manager of public affairs, as saying that Disney was aware of the issue and that the iPhone had been discovered on the Wonder. The cruise line will return the phone to McCaffrey when the ship's current cruise returns.
Peddie also said that the crew member has been placed on administrative leave as they investigate the issue and he is no longer allowed near guest areas.
As of today, McCaffrey's album has been shared over 18,000 times. To see the amusing album, click here.
