As San Francisco celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, you may be considering making it one of your next travel destinations. There are plenty of things to do while visiting this famous California city.
See the Golden Gate Bridge
It would be pretty hard to miss, as it is San Francisco's most recognized icon, but there are plenty of ways and angles to see this most photogenic bridge. An obvious option would to make use of it and drive or it, but you can also bike or walk on the bridge. Another cool option is to take a boat tour and ride under it.
Ride a Cable Car
The cable cars are another iconic, unique must do. A ride on a cable car can be a thrill as they roll up and down the hills of San Fran. If you're lucky enough to stand on the outside on the car, you'll be able to see some interesting neighborhoods. Just be prepared to wait on a long line to get on one.
Escape to Alcatraz
No one wants to go to prison, but luckily for tourists, it's just a visit. Alcatraz is one of the world's most famous prisons. You'll take a ferry to the island and you can go on a tour where you visit the cells, the exercise yard, and other locations. Be sure to set time for this as a trip to Alcatraz can take up half of your day.
Explore Chinatown
San Francisco's Chinatown is the largest outside of Asia, but don't be intimidated. It's really only 8 blocks long and 3 blocks wide. Stroll along the streets and pick up some souvenirs, take some pictures, and enjoy the food from one of 300 restaurants.
Golden Gate Park
At three miles long and a half a mile wide, Golden State park is the city's largest outdoor spot and it's even larger than New York City's Central Park. Here you can see things like Dutch Windmills, a buffalo herd, remote-controlled boats, museums and gardens or even have a picnic. Some of the most popular attractions are the Japanese Tea Garden, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the California Academy of Sciences and the Conservatory of Flowers. Just note that this park is a bit far from the main tourist destinations.
Catch a Game
If you're a sports fan or if you've never been to a baseball game, enjoy this American pastime as you watch the San Francisco Giants play in a downtown stadium. If it isn't baseball season, you can try to catch an American football game with the 49ers.
Grab some Grub
The city has a reputation for being one of America's culinary capitals, as it has over 4,500 restaurants in this relatively small place. Check out one of the local eateries and chow down.
Soak Up the Culture
San Francisco takes art and music very seriously. Visit the San Francisco Museum of Art which displays work by Jeff Koons, Marcel Duchamp, and more. This museum ranks among the best in the world and it is the second largest Museum of Art, behind New York's.
Show Gay Pride
In June, the gay community celebrates with the Pride Festival, in which the streets are filled with a mass of colors and costumes. Throughout the year, San Francisco has a legendary gay scene including clubs and drag shows.
