Half of Pet Owners Plan On Traveling With Their Pets

This summer, adults, teens and kids won't be the only ones traveling. Pets will be on the move as well.

According to PetRelocation.com, an international pet travel and pet transportation service provider, nearly half of pet owners plan on traveling with their pets this summer. This information comes from their third annual Summer Pet Travel Survey.

This summer, Forty-seven percent of respondents said they planned to travel with their pets within the next three months. Another 40 percent plan to travel with their pets within the next year.

The majority of pets that will be tagging along with their owners will be dogs, as 85 percent responded. About a quarter of people said that their cats will be joining along for the ride.

There are some factors that pet owners are looking for specifically when it comes to making summer travel plans for their pets.

Pet owners are looking for pet-friendly hotels, but 40 percent said that there aren't enough to choose from. There are some other difficulties that arise when trying to set up plans. Seventeen percent found extra hotel fees to be an inconvenience. Another 17 percent claimed that there aren't enough pet-friendly airlines to choose from, making their plans difficult.

Twelve percent of those who could find pet friendly airlines found airline pet fees to be too high. This number has decreased as 18 percent claimed this to be an issue in the previous year and 38 percent in 2010.

Safety is also a priority when it comes to traveling with a pet. For the third year in a row, safety was cited as the top priority for pet travelers. Sixty percent said that safety was their main concern. In second place was convenience, said 25 percent, and pricing was the final top concern for 15 percent of people.

Pet owners who want to bring their pets along would go out of their way to make sure that their pet pets are happy on a trip. Ninety percent of people said they would change their travel plans to better accommodate their pets and 57 percent would choose a hotel based on its pet-friendly features.
