If you were to swim a lap in the world's largest pool, you'd be swimming the equivalent of 20 Olympic size swimming pools. The Crystal Lagoon at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile has earned the title of th largest swimming pool in the world.
The man-made lagoon is set in the middle of the Pacific coast in the city of Algarrobo, Chile. This massive pool, which contains 66 million gallons of crystal clear seawater, is so large that sailboats can be used in it, making them look like toys in a bathtub, on a grander scale.
The pool's enormous 20 acre area alone may be intimidating, but those who are afraid to enter the deep end might want to avoid this massive lake. Even those who enjoy the deep end might get a little nervous, as the pool also holds the Guinness record for being the deepest pool in the world-115 ft.
After five years of construction, the pool officially opened in 2006. It is said to have set developers back £1billion. To keep this pool up and running, it costs £2million a year.
The pool uses a computer-controlled suction and filtration system to suck water in from the bordering Pacific at one end and pump it out at the other end. The sun brings the pool's temperature up to 26 degrees Celsius, which is nine degrees warmer than the ocean.
The pool creates the perfect atmosphere for those who want to enjoy the ocean without having to worry about the creatures that may be living beneath.
San Alfonso del Mar resort's 3,323ft Crystal Lagoon puts the next biggest pool to shame. The Orthlieb in Morocco measures at a measly 1,575 ft long.
