Hero Cat Saves Baby - A newborn baby not older than 12 weeks was abandoned yet saved from freezing to death by a stray cat. The hero cat saves baby after the feline found it in a box on a staircase in an apartment block in the town of Obninsk, Russia.
Though meant for a cat, the box contained the baby, and it appeared the cat couldn't resist her motherly instincts to protect the baby until help arrived.
The hero cat that saved the baby was a tabby named Marsha. She climbed into the box containing the infant and kept the child warm for several hours as the temperature became freezing cold.
After being alerted by the boy's cries, residents in the block of flats found the cat curled around the freezing baby boy, licking his face, according to the Daily Mail.
A woman who lives in one of the flats, Nadezhda Makhovikova, told REN TV that she went out onto the stairwell after hearing what sounded like Marsha meowing in distress.
Thinking that there were people in the area abusing the cat, the neighbour rushed outside her apartment and instead discovered the hero cat saving the baby in the cat box.
"When I went down, I saw it was the baby crying," she said.
"She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself," said Obninsk city resident Irina Lavrova, another one of the residents who thought the cat was abused in distress and who had been witness to the hero cat saving the baby boy.
"Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby," she added.
"Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child," she explained after the hero cat saves baby.
Apparently though, Marsha's mothering instincts didn't extend only to the box and inside the building, she also seemed to worry about the boy even the arrival of police and medics. She remained close to the boy and didn't seem to want to let it go, according to RT.
Marsha, the hero cat that saved the baby, even ran after the paramedics as they took the infant to the ambulance.
"She was so worried about where we were taking the baby," paramedic Vera Ivanina told REN TV.
"She ran right behind us, meowing. She was really a rational creature," she added of the hero cat saves baby story.
The feline even reportedly tried to jump into the ambulance just to follow the boy.
According to the flat residents, after the hero cat saved boy, she then sat for hours on the road by the house, appearing as if waiting for the car to return.
The baby, estimated to be aged between two to three months, was taken to one of the hospitals in Obninsk, which is located some 60 miles from the Russian capital, and where he was checked over by medics.
The infant was eventually declared fit and healthy despite being left for hours in the cold, because the hero cat saved him.
"The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha ... he was not damaged by the experience," according to a hospital spokesman, as told to Central European News.
"We have received a lot of feedback from sympathizing residents, who are willing to help and ask if any food, toys and other things are needed," a pediatric nurse told Ruptly after the hero cat saves baby and the baby survived.
Marsha has reportedly been living in the apartment block for three years already, thriving on the food given by residents there.
After the hero cat saves baby, the tabby has been hailed as a hero by local resident, and has since been spoiled rotten with food in the block of flats, the New York Post reports.
"Everyone in the block is very proud of her," said Lavrova . "We have all spoiled her rotten by giving her her favorite food."
Meanwhile, police are now investigating to identify the baby and his parents. The infant is now being cared for in a hospital.
