Martin Pistorius Interview: Man Who Wakes Up From 12 Year Coma Talks About Experience, Claims To Have 'Felt Everything'

Martin Pistorius Interview - Most cases of comatose patients remain in coma until their family decides to pull the plug. For one man from South Africa, his parents had to deal with his vegetative state for 12 years. This was until he woke up from his coma after being trapped in his body for 12 years.

According to Martin Pistorius interview, he lost total control over his body functions and his awareness at the age of 12. Doctors failed to properly diagnose Martin's condition thus failing to give him the right treatment. Day by day, Martin's body started to weaken until he was rendered comatose.

Early diagnosis by Martin's doctors claim it was cryptococcal meningitis. The sickness caused his condition to worsen, which led doctors to claim he'd simply die or never wake up from the coma. In Martin Pistorius interview, he reveals that his father had a routine each day to care for him.

This routine involved having to dress Martin up at 5 in the morning to take him to care center. By the end of the day, he's be bathed before fed dinner then be put to bed. The routine also involved having to turn Martin every two hours to decrease the chance of bed sores.

Martin Pistorius' interview reveals that this was the life his family had for 12 years. Obviously, not all parents were pleased with the set-up as he allegedly heard his mother say: "I hope you die." Martin felt hopeless having been stuck in a vegetative state where he could hear and feel everything, but not be able to reach out to those around him.

"You don't really think about anything," reveals Pistorius. "You simply exist. It's a very dark place to find yourself because, in a sense, you are allowing yourself to vanish."

Martin Pistorius interview was shared a week ago on the National Public Radio. The interview was shared on their program, Invisibilia.
