North Korea US Talks: DPRK Promises To Stop Nuclear Tests If Washington Promises To Stop Joint Military Exercises With South Korea

North Korea US talks may or may not happen following the former nation's renewed bid to sway Washington's decision after it rejected Pyongyang's proposal to suspend nuclear tests under the condition that yearly American military drills with South Korea were put off. According to An Myong Hun, if the proposal is accepted, "many things will be possible this year on the Korean peninsula."

Hun, the deputy UN Ambassador of North Korea, however, did not care to elaborate about the "many things" that could possibly happen.

The US state department considered this recent North Korean offer as a veiled threat that inappropriately linked the joint military exercises with South Korea, which have been carried out for years, with nuclear tests.

Hun said, "The government of the DPRK is ready to explain its intention behind this proposal directly to the United States. We're ready for that if the United States wants additional explanation about our proposal." According to Hun, the "meaningful and significant proposal" was processed through "appropriate channels" on Friday.

"By refusing to accept our proposal, the United States has shown once again that they will continue to increase military capabilities in South Korea while requesting us not to have our own national defense capabilities," he added. "This is absolutely unacceptable and cannot be justified by anything."

At present, the DPRK is under a multitude of sanctions, from the US, the UN, and other national entities, for repeated ballistic missile and nuclear tests since 2006, which was a clear defiance to the international demands that they cease from doing such activities.

North Korea oftentimes promises to stop missile and nuclear tests in exchange for the Washington's decision to ease military tensions. The US and South Korea have been quite adamant in insisting that their annual military practices were only purely defensive, testing out the latter country's readiness to confront plausible North Korean aggression.
