Whether you're traveling to a nearby city or flying overseas, arming yourself with some travel safety tips can help you enjoy your trip and decrease your chances of being a target of crime. Here are some basic safety tips to keep in mind:
Learn About Your Destination
It may sound obvious but knowing basic information about your destination city or country can help you understand the local culture and avoid faux pas that make you stand out as an obvious tourist. A quick online search can help you learn about local customs and crime stats, including areas with high crime rates.
Packing
Pack smart and you'll have everything you need on your trip without having to cart around extra items. Make sure you have more than enough of your medications and carry an extra pair of glasses or contacts if you wear them. Also include an emergency medical contact form in your wallet. Do not bring any valuables that you do not absolutely need. Wearing expensive jewelry or watches will only increase your chances of being a target. Also pack light so you can move around easily and do not have to keep stopping to shift bags or put bags down. Carting around large bags also increases your chances of being a target.
If you are traveling abroad, make sure you have your passport as well as traveler's checks and credit cards instead of cash.
Tag each piece of your luggage with your name, address and phone number.
Legal Issues
Before you leave, make copies of your current health insurance card, will and other personal legal documents. Also, research the laws in the country you will be visiting because you will be subject to the same laws as citizens of that nation.
Street Safety
Do not travel in unfamiliar areas alone at night. If you are traveling alone, regularly check in with a family member or friend so someone knows your whereabouts. Try to blend in and don't wear loud colors, slogans or sports jerseys that show you are from another country. Walk as if you know where you are going, even if you do not. Be wary of people who ask for money or directions or try to sell you something. Keep your hotel door locked at all times and stay in large hotels with good security.
