If you're packing your bags for a road trip or jetting off to a tropical beach this summer, you are not alone -- according to a recent survey by the American Automobile Association, more Americans plan to travel this summer than last summer.
According to the survey, about 1.2 percent more Americans plan to travel this Memorial Day weekend over last year's holiday weekend. AAA estimates about 34.8 million Americans will voyage at least 50 miles from home for the official kick off to the summer holiday weekend.
Even in the face of high fuel costs, more than half of the people surveyed said that won't affect their Memorial Day weekend travel plans. Others are going to account for the fuel hikes by traveling closer to home or saving money with deals on lodging, according to AAA.
According to Deloitte professional firm in New York City, summer travel numbers continue to rise gradually, showing an increasing confidence in the economy. Deloitte recently released a survey showing that 54 percent of Americans are planning to take a trip this summer, which is a 2 percent rise over those who planned to travel last summer.
In order to stay on a budget in a still shaky economy, many travelers are making a beeline for airlines with no bag check fees, such as Southwest. Luxury vacations are not in high demand but budget travel is, in the wake of the recession.
If you're one of the many budget travelers, here are some savvy ways to save money this travel season:
- Look for hotel package deals that include food such as free continental breakfasts.
- Scour travel discount sites such as Priceline and Hotwire for the best deals on flights and hotels.
- If you're renting a car, seek out package deals that include a discount on your lodging and car rental. Go for economy cars and skip the gas guzzlers when renting a vehicle.
- Take public transit such as busses, subways and trains to save money on cab fares, car rentals and airplane costs.
- Sign up for airline rewards programs so you can earn credits from your trips and save up for a future discount or free flight.
- If you're traveling with a group, see if family or group discounts are available. Seniors and children often qualify for reduced admission to shows, museums and amusement parks.
- Cut down on extra entertainment expenses by going to fewer shows or special exhibits. Check out free or discounted exhibits and matinee movies or have your own movie party in your hotel room to have fun without breaking the bank.
