Ship Overturns Scotland - Eight are missing and a major search operation was launched after a ship overturned off the north of Scotland. The search began Saturday after the crew of a passenger ferry reportedly raised the alarm when they saw the upturned hull of the vessel in the Pentland Firth.
After the ship overturned in Scotland, and the search was launched, darkness fell hence calling off the search in the evening. It resumed Sunday morning, but passing vessels were still asked to scan the area between Orkney and John O'Groats overnight.
Eight people were reported to have been on board as the Cypriot-registered Cemfjord ship overturns, Scotland, according to the BBC.
The vessel was reported to have been carrying 2,000 tonnes of cement from Denmark to Runcorn near Liverpool. No distress call had been received, reports euronews.
The 83m Cemfjord had been sailing to Runcorn in Cheshire before the ship overturns, Scotland. Its last confirmed sighting was at about 1:00 p.m. Friday and the alarm was raised by the crew of the passenger ferry Hrossey at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
According to the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, four lifeboats, two helicopters and other vessels were involved in the search after the ship overturned in Scotland. Shetland Coastguard is reportedly co-ordinating the rescue efforts. The NorthLink ferry Hrossey was also reported to have taken part in the early stages of the operation.
In a statement, the ship's German operators Brise of Hamburg said that the crew members included seven Poles and a Filipino. They confirmed that the men were missing after a "severe accident".
"No distress call was received from the vessel. Bad weather prevailed in the area at the time and conditions remain difficult at the scene, with storm force winds. The company is in the process of informing the families," the statement said further.
According to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), there were no survivors in the immediate vicinity after the ship overturned in Scotland.
A MCA spokeswoman said "every effort" was being made to find the missing crew.
Since the ship has overturned in Scotland, the Marine Accident Investigation Board (MAIB) has also deployed a team to investigate, Sky News reports.
