California Motorists Stranded In Snow - The final hours of 2014 may have been a little too tough for several motorists in Southern California after the winter storm brought them no choice than to stay in their vehicles as strong winds and heavy snow came their way.
According to USA Today, over 180 drivers were caught in the California motorists stranded in snow story, which took place early Wednesday at the San Bernardino Mountains.
Per a news release from the San Bernardino County Fire Department, authorities managed to complete the rescue operation despite the extreme weather condition.
The news release also included that 136 people were rescued on State Highway 138, located not far from Crestline and Mount Baldy, which is nearly 50 miles from Los Angeles.
San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman Tracey Martinez confirmed that 136 people were indeed stranded along Highway 138 since late Tuesday.
Firefighters and law enforcement officers used tracking vehicles to rescue the motorists who were trapped in their vehicles because heavy snow and ice covered the roads, reports NBC Los Angeles.
Despite the chilling environment when the California motorists got stranded in snow, authorities managed to carry out the rescue operation successfully and finished it by 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Reports state that a number of motorists drove their vehicles away after snowplows cleared the road. On the other hand, a number of people were forced to leave their cars on the highway just to find comfort at a nearby shelter and church or their own homes.
Authorities said they began to receive emergency calls around 7 p.m. Tuesday, reporting that many drivers were having difficulty in passing through the roads because of the year-end winter storm.
The storm brought harsh winds that even knocked down a number of trees and caused some power outages in San Francisco in time for the New Year celebrations, according to AccuWeather.
Latest updates on the winter storm reveal that one person got killed after a tree crashed into a Redding, California home. Two others were said to be injured out of the incident.
Additionally, four people were injured in Pasadena, Ca., after strong winds destroyed their tents outside the Rose Bowl.
More details on the California motorists stranded in snow story are to be released soon.
