Chrysler Recalls Trucks - Fiat Chrysler has announced a major recall for thousands of its 2006-2007 pickups after one death was linked to a major clutch problem among its trucks.
According to Yahoo! Finance, Chrysler is recalling over 54,558 trucks in the United States, 4,356 in Canada, 7,600 in Mexico and 257 outside the NAFTA region because of a clutch problem that could lead to accidents.
The main issue lies on the fact that the 2006-2007 pickup trucks of the company can be started without the need of stepping on the clutch.
The clutch problem was mainly identified in May when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration carried out an investigation over the death of a child, who was said to have been killed by a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500.
A child reportedly started the truck without using the clutch. When the 2006 model moved forward, it struck another child, which unfortunately led to the latter's demise.
On Monday, Chrysler revealed that the problem may be due to the clutch ignition interlock switch that could break if drivers do not follow recommended starting procedures, reports Global News.
Vehicles powered by manual transmissions are supposed to have interlock mechanisms that hamper the motor from starting unless the clutch is depressed. In this case however, the faulty switch could not only disrupt the start-up process but could also move the trucks once the ignition key is turned.
Based on the statement of Chrysler's move to recall thousands of its trucks, the vehicles that will be retrieved are Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and Mitsubishi Ranger pickups manufactured between July 2005 and June 2006.
The company already confirmed that they will replace the switches free of charge, so consumers don't need to worry at all, Press TV has learned.
