Michael Sam's boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, made the headlines after Sam became the first openly gay man to be drafted into the NFL. The world was able to witness to how Sam celebrated with his long-time boyfriend.
Sam's fans were given a quick glimpse into his world, as his celebratory moments were briefly caught on video. His life was further featured in a 90-minute documentary entitled "OWN," which talked about how his desire to make it as an athlete as well as his motivation to live an open and authentic life.
Sam also had a sit-down interview with Oprah. It was his first interview since he got drafted into the NFL and later cut from two teams.
After three days filled with anticipation, Sam learned that he was chosen by the St. Louis Rams, something that any player would have been very emotional about.
As a form of celebration, Sam playfully smashed a cake in Cammisano's face and gave the now famous Michael Sam's boyfriend a tender kiss. Despite the obvious romance, many criticized this moment and referred to it as controversial. Some even went far and insisted that the kiss was completely staged.
However, according to Sam, their kiss was not staged at all. He even mentioned that cameras were not even supposed to finish filming at that point. "They were only supposed to film the moment I got drafted," shared Sam. "That's what people don't understand. They say it was staged. Well, I'm having fun. I'm in a good mood."
He then added, "If you don't like it, grab your remote control, turn the channel."
Since he publicly came out of the closet, Sam stated that other gay men in the NFL have started to reach out to him as well. He revealed, "Very few reached out to me and pretty much just told me their gratitude. They wished that they had the courage to come out."
