Google Phone Project Ara Update: Project Ara Comes Out Early Next Year For The Price Of $50

Google Phone Project Ara lets users customize their smart phones, according to K Pop Starz.

Google Phone Project Ara allows users to create their own smart phone starting in March 2015. The build-it-yourself handset comes with the starting price of $50 to $100.

As a preparation, Google teamed up with software company Globant to provide the parts and chips needed for the project. Project Ara starts with a skeleton body and users can customize everything from the screen to CPU. This will enable the user to fully control their device including the price, Digital Trends reported.

Google Phone Project Ara will run an Android operating system. The company hinted that the modular phone will be available to 6 billion people. A Google Play store can also be accessible wherein customers can order the parts and have it delivered.

Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group lead by Regina Dugan is an organization within Google-owned Motorola will head Project Ara. Motorola shared details about the incoming project, according to TIME.

"The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules. The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter--or something not yet thought of!" Motorola said.

The project took two years to materialize. Project Ara's director Paul Eremenko highly praised the external workers they hired for the challenging venture.

"They're absolute superstars in their field. Creative, out-of-the-box, do-anything kind of guys. I could never, ever get them to work [for Google] full time, move across the country, et cetera, et cetera. There was no way in the traditional model to capture that mindshare," Eremenko said.

If users are wondering why the grand project is called Ara, it is named after one of the founders of NK Labs named Ara Knaian. The engineering laboratory is the main contractor for Google's Project Ara.

Knaian talked about the challenge of creating a huge project.

"A big challenge on this project was that a cell phone is one of the most integrated things that's made today, and we're trying to separate it into modular pieces. And so the challenge was how to fit everything in an efficient way, so that people could have the ability at home to add and remove modules and have a lot of flexibility about what modules they put in, but not to have too much added weight or too much added cost by doing that," Knaian said.

Meawnhile, a website dedicated for Google Phone Project Ara has been created. Customers may get to know more about the plan by accessing the site.
