Every day, crossing guards are dedicated to ensure that the children in their communities are able to get to their schools safely. Kendrick became a crossing guard several years ago when he retired from his previous job with the city of Dallas.
Kendrick told WFAA, an ABC affiliate, "My mother told me long before she passed, 'Take care of your wife.' So, I try my best."
His financial situation was so bad that his car, his only one, had to be repossessed. Fortunately for crossing guard gets car, a group of very generous dads from the Friends of Lakewood community organization helped him during his roughest times. They aided him by buying him a new car.
One of the organizers of this act of generosity, Russell McMillan, said, "What we decided to do was to get in the car, pull it around the corner, and park it in the middle of the crosswalk. Nobody does that." It was supposed to be a surprise for Kendrick, and the crossing guard gets car was, indeed, very surprised.
He was initially confused by what happened, since he has never seen anything like that on the crossing before. He first thought that the Mercury sedan belonged to someone else. McMillan shared, "He's asking us to move the car, and I'm going, 'Well, it's your car. Why don't you move it?'"
Kendrick was speechless and was overcome with emotions when he eventually realized that the car right in front of him was a gift for him. One of the fathers told him, "You deserve every bit of this." This very kind act was a true example of members of the community helping each other. "Everything is good. I love y'all," Kendrick said.
