Steve Carell North Korea Film Scrapped After Sony Pictures Hack; Sony Pulled The Plug On ‘The Interview’ Following Terrorist Threats

Steve Carell North Korea movie was scrapped as a result of the recent Sony Pictures hack and terrorist threats against "The Interview." New Regency decided not to pursue the untitled thriller, which was reportedly set up this past October.

Sony Pictures has just made an official announcement on Wednesday that they have decided to pull the plug on the raunchy comedy that featured James Franco and Seth Rogan. "The Interview" was actually about an attempted assassination of a North Korean dictator.

The decision to throw the film into the bin came after the company was targeted by a massive cyber-attack, which largely compromised terabytes of sensitive and even embarrassing company data. Sadly, the hackers wanted to fully humiliate the mega company by releasing the information to the public drip by drip.

The Steve Carell North Korea flick was being developed by known director Gore Verbinski and was to be starred by "Foxcatcher" actor Carell. Its screenplay, which delves into paranoia, was written by Steve Conrad. It was initially scheduled to start filming by March of next year.

Sadly, however, insiders have confirmed that, under the current circumstances, moving the Steve Carell North Korea movie forward no longer makes sense. The location will no longer be transplanted. And, besides, Fox reportedly declined to distribute it.

Fortunately for the studio, New Regency still has other films with Verbinski as part of a multi-year, multi-picture deal. It would seem that the partnership will now focus on those. Verbinski has now opted to move on to "A Cure for Wellness," which is an elevated horror film that was written by scribe Justin Haythe of "Revolutionary Road."

Plus, apart from that, there was also another large-scale action comedy that was scripted by Conrad. Originally, the plan was to come up with three films in quick succession. However, because of the recent Sony Pictures hack, they have changed their minds and have decided to just make two instead.
