Baby giraffe name chosen for the new mammal recently born in the Como Zoo was Skye. The said zoo's latest addition to its family of animals was born on November 25th, at six feet tall and weighed 145 pounds.
Although Skye was born in late November, it was only on Monday when the youngest giraffe in the Como Park Zoo made its public debut.
Skye becomes the fifth calf to be given birth to by Daisy and is the 18th baby giraffe name to be born inside the Como Zoo for the last 20 years. Additionally, the new baby giraffe name, which happens to be an adorable baby girl, becomes the fourth giraffe who presently resides inside the said zoo, including mother Daisy, father Skeeter, and one more adult giraffe Clover.
The zoo decided to give the baby giraffe name, Skye, from a randomly selected Como Friends supporter who had made a donation of at least $55 during the zoo's celebrated Give to the Max Day.
Although Skye was born in the Como Zoo, the zookeeper, Allison Jungheim, has stated that it remains unclear as to where it will be placed for public viewing. According to Jungheim, Daisy belongs to the San Diego Zoo "and, per our breeding agreement, every other giraffe calf born to her belongs to San Diego."
She then added, "So, depending on what San Diego wants to do, it'll either go to the San Diego Zoo, or it will become a collection animal at another institution." Hopefully, baby giraffe name Skye will be allowed to stay with its family in the Como Zoo.
Unlike human beings, giraffes give birth while standing up. With this position, their baby giraffes end up falling more than five feet to the ground as they get their first breath. In just a span of 30 minutes, they will be able to run for hours on end.
According to the spokesperson of the zoo, Matt Reinartz, baby giraffe name Skye "landed softly" on sand and straw, which were strategically under the mother. In just a matter of minutes, Skye managed to get up on all fours.
